The winery carries a strong sense of legacy, with its name and identity rooted in family heritage — Chris Figgins previously being associated with Leonetti Cellar, his family's celebrated wine business. The brand positions itself around the concept of estate integrity, with its tagline \"World-Class Estate Wines from Walla Walla, WA\" reflecting its commitment to single-estate production.\n\n## Winemaker\n\nChris Figgins serves as the winemaker and driving force behind Figgins. His path to winemaking was not straightforward: during his junior year of college, while pursuing an architectural degree, he made the decision to return home and join the family wine business. He subsequently shifted his studies to horticulture, grounding his winemaking in an agricultural and scientific foundation. His early passion for architecture never left him, and it manifests visibly in the design of the estate winery itself — a structure he describes as a marriage of cutting-edge design with modern lines, industrial detail, and technical winemaking infrastructure. His philosophy toward the land is reverent and sustainability-minded, captured in his own words: *\"I shall build not upon the earth, but of it and in it, giving her the respect she so deserves.\"*\n\n## Vineyard Sources\n\nFiggins operates as a true estate winery, sourcing exclusively from its own estate vineyard in Walla Walla Valley. The vineyard sits on a southern-facing slope, a orientation that optimizes sun exposure for ripening. The estate winery and caves are hewn into hillside terrain composed of 15-million-year-old solid basalt, speaking to the ancient geological character of the site. While specific soil data and vineyard acreage are not detailed in the available text, the geological and topographical context suggests a site with significant natural character. The estate's positioning is described as having minimal environmental impact on the surrounding landscape, consistent with a sustainability-conscious farming approach.\n\n## Signature Wines\n\nThe Figgins portfolio is built around a focused lineup of estate wines. Named wines visible in their lineup include:\n\n- **Estate Red Wine** — The winery's flagship red blend\n- **Estate Riesling** — A notable inclusion, reflecting the Walla Walla Valley's capacity for aromatic white varieties\n- **Figlia** — A distinct wine within the portfolio, likely a second label or alternative cuvée based on its separate listing\n\nThese wines reflect Chris Figgins' commitment to estate-grown, terroir-expressive winemaking rather than a broad, multi-sourced portfolio.\n\n## Tasting Room & Visitor Experience\n\nThe Figgins tasting room is described as intimate and architecturally distinctive. Perched within the estate winery building, it offers what the winery calls \"breath-taking views\" of the estate's grapevines and the Blue Mountain foothills beyond. The experience is designed to connect visitors directly with the land and the source of the wines.\n\nA signature visitor offering is the **Cave Experience Tour & Tasting**, which takes guests into the winery's subterranean wine caves — one of the most distinctive features of the property. These caves were hand-carved into 15-million-year-old solid basalt, reaching a maximum depth of 35 feet below the vineyard surface. They naturally maintain a temperature of 55–58°F and 65% humidity, conditions ideal for aging premium wines. The caves represent both a functional winemaking asset and a philosophically meaningful one, described by the winery as \"another way we can honor the earth sustainably.\" Visitors can book Cave Experience tours and tastings directly through the winery.\n\n## Winery Character\n\nWhat most distinctly sets Figgins apart in the Walla Walla wine landscape is the integration of architecture, geology, and winemaking philosophy into a unified estate vision. Chris Figgins brought a background in architectural study to bear on the design of the winery, resulting in a facility that is both technically sophisticated and aesthetically intentional. The use of naturally climate-controlled basalt caves for wine aging is rare and speaks to a long-term, sustainability-driven approach. The estate model — growing, producing, and aging entirely on-site — positions Figgins as one of Walla Walla's more self-contained and philosophically coherent producers. The winery's roots in the Figgins family legacy, most notably through the connection to Leonetti Cellar, lend it a historical depth uncommon among newer Washington State producers.","somm_notes":[{"title":"Patti's notes on Figgins","content":"Premium Bordeaux-style wines paired with a breathtaking view of the Blue Mountains-there's a reason Figgins is a must-visit. FWIW, Col Solare is grown in the Red Mountain region and Figgins in the Walla Walla Valley - they are quite different. Also, on the current side-by-side, Figgins is a boutique, family-owned and operated producer while Louis Martini is owned by E&J Gallo, one of the largest wine companies in the world, albeit family-owned. The Figgins wines are monsters, thus the big scores. If you can find different Walla Walla Valley wines with scores in the 90-94 range, you'll most likely find something amazing but more approachable than Figgins - they are definitely on the far end of the power scale.","date":"2026-01-10"},{"source":"reddit","reviewer":"u/Flgator196553","rating":null,"rating_max":null,"text":"2015 Figgins Estate Red\n\nDark Ruby and opaque with very little color variation at rim.\n\nThe nose is medium plus in intensity with pencil lead, black cherry, tobacco , and some menthol.\n\nOn the palate it is a very seamless wine with a velvety and creamy feel. Tannins are well integrated at this point. There is alot of dark fruits, mocha, ripe plums, and a slight taste of oak.\n\nAcid is medium plus and the finish is long.
